Mainframes, once again

These days, I work on testing a large and complex application suite hosted on an equally complex infrastructure that supports it. Most of the systems are small but potent applications home-built by my customer to suit their business needs and these mostly reside on large mainframe systems. While the technology itself is not very recent, it surely is amazing to see how long the mainframe systems have existed and are very relevant even in today's touch and cloud era. This is only my second exposure to a mainframe based solution/assignment in a career spanning 17 years now and both the times, have been awed by the stability and the reliability these systems have offered. Mainframes are no more defined by their single task computation speed for which they were anyway known for but more by their ever evolving internal engineering that makes them ever more reliable and secure not to mention backward compatibility and ability to support massive throughput. All, very good reasons for large secure enterprises to continue investing in them.

So, here I am, leading a large testing group mainly designing tests for applications for large infrastructure overhaul programs consisting of a galaxy of financial and banking applications that has to constantly be tested to assure high availability, work load sharing without which it would be catastrophic and hugely expensive for my customers' business. If one were to memory jog on the Reliability,Availability and Serviceability that we learnt many years ago and how these were the bare minimal needs of any computing systems. Mainframes just satisfies this even to this day alongwith newer enhancements that have seen manifold increase in the computational power of these machines. The integration with web based applications and cutting edge enterprise software like SAP and a host of other systems seems seamless. I am also fortunate to work with a bunch of folks who are main frame designers. The last I met someone was about a decade ago who did something close to what these folks do. Nowadays its mostly project managers and app developers or the smart technology geeks who i work with. No more beer bellied, handle bar mustached geeks in collarless tees who breathed bits and flops for a living.Did you also know that the National Institute of Standards and Technology vulnerabilities database, US-CERT, rates traditional mainframes such as IBM zSeries, Unisys Dorado and Unisys Libra as among the most secure with vulnerabilities in the low single digits as compared with thousands for Windows, Linux and Unix - I didn't

From an era when mainframes had no explicitly interactive interface, when they just accepted inputs of any form -punched cards, tapes to transfer data and programs. They mostly operated in batch mode to support back office functions and end-users. Today, the interactiveness is exponentially better and one can access a Web-style user interface, not to mention the ability of these systems to host different operating systems using virtual machines.

I spend the next couple of years in a small English town taking on these timeless machines hurtling myself almost a trip down memory lane planning and designing tests on these systems. My work takes me to server racks and data centers which is so nostalgic of the computer systems that one would so often see in the seventies and eighties. Relearning or unlearning - yet to decide, but, surely fun!

Britain Celebrates!

I couldn't miss the stack of newspapers at the News stand this morning.Today's edition of The Sun becomes " The Son" to herald the arrival of the Prince of Cambridge. These  40p tabloids! :-) Britain Celebrates an extraordinary summer and the arrival of the latest Prince. Folks in nearby Tewkesbury celebrating by raising a toast to the Royal family. Meanwhile the unusual English summer has been more than warm. Swindon, where I live these days had its first thunderstorm and heavy showers last night and this morning reminding me of the pre monsoon rains in Bengaluru.
Britain will have to find a new national pastime, It cannot complain about the weather anymore..More soon on the Wiltshire life as I begin to settle in, find a house and importantly start cooking my food! Otherwise, not much to write home from a 8X10 room in a Holiday Inn Express..

Our Li'l Champ turns One

Little Pradyumna turned One yesterday according to the hindu calendar. The Gregorian calendar celebrated his birthday last month with a cake cutting. The celebration was marked by the Chudakarma Samskara as per the hindu tradition where he was almost tonsured. Surprisingly, he seems to have liked his new look which of course, left his elder sister Samiksha surprised and shocked when she returned from school that afternoon to see a new look Pradyumna look almost as gleeful as ever.. The anklets were the first to go followed by the curly locks and soon the ear danglings..

Pradyumna on his first Birthday!
The event itself was a low key affair with close family including his grandparents and Uncles and Aunts being present. I had to leave for Pune later that evening on a week long work trip. Thanks to all the wellwishers who wished Pradyumna on this memorable day!. Gundubaba rocks!

The week was also memorable due to another milestone when Samiksha learned to cycle solo without the training wheels. She's been cycling like crazy ever since and must have done a few miles already. These days, she is specialising negotiating fast traffic mostly learning to keep pace with her cousin brother Dhruva and another equally bubbly kid Archit.  It will not be long before her other cousins Pratyush and Sachet catch up with summer time learnings like swimming and cycling..Truly wunder years when the kids are growing.

Finale - Champs League

I write this as i wait groggily for the Champions Trophy final between Dortmund Borussia and my favourite champion side Bayern Munich.

It has begun, for reasons that are not clear, with a giant wooden horse being rolled onto the pitch. Are Panathinaikos going to jump out and usurp one of these teams' place in the final? hahaa...That's the opening ceremony for you.

Bayern has been in amazing form this year and the confidence levels are so high after winning the Bundesliga with a record point tally. Neuer - Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba - Martinez, Schweinsteiger - Robben, Müller, Ribéry - Mandzukić- Oh what a combination these guys have been. I need to get back to my screen to catch back on the game...More updates later and wish Bayern every luck in this game

A Hopeful citizen

I was recently in Pune in connection with a client visit for a new project that we begin soon in the UK. After a hectic 2 day trip and being in formal business suits in 41 Degree Celsius,I returned to my hotel quite exhausted and also happy looking to be home the same evening. After a quick checkout from the hotel, I settled myself in Ganesh's Cab 3 hours ahead of my flight time in order to beat the notorious Hinjewadi-Wakad traffic mentally prepared for detours through Khadki,Aundh and Shivajinagar. Meet, Ganesh Ramachandra Walunj, my cab driver at Pune, a man in his early thirties, well educated or atleast well informed and hard working. Ganesh is from a village just off the Satara highway about 40 kms from Pune. He seemed to have driven around many Senior executives and corporate leaders to nearby Lavasa or Sahara City and all these had made him very sensitive to corporate expectations. He promptly pointed me to the small tray in the car holding magazines, a few bars of chocolates and a bottle of mineral water which i acknowledged but did not consume. Instead, I chose to speak given my habit of picking conversations with just about anyone during travel  and in no time was fascinated by his choice of topics for debate that evening. Ganesh made an attempt to highlight waht ails our country today and his very accurate diagnosis of the problems of the country impressed me no ends. Ganesh felt very uneasy and told me almost with a touch of personal regret about how able-bodied men are neglecting their fields, careers and working as security guards or attendants in malls  for a relatively easier 5000 rs and on the way taking to tobacco and drinking. He rued about the falling human development index in the country. Now, no one had told me that before and it was a revelation of sorts to me and this one needed no root cause analysis or a Pareto analysis.Ganesh's top agenda items- Eradicate Caste, control population and respect for the girl child. He was more than a 100% confident that these were indeed the root cause of every thing that ails this country. At the end of a 90 minute ride to the airport, he left me perplexed by his awareness levels, an urge to lead a principled life and above all saw a citizen full of hope in anticipation of good things to come.. I am impressed and confident than ever that change is coming

I am looking forward to my month end trip to Pune with the hope that i get another chance to speak to him in the slow moving traffic and this time, I am not complaining about the short 2 day trip..

Ganesh, May your tribe increase!

I am an Indian

From my Facebook wall

I am an Indian... and these make me more so

When the shampoo bottle seems to be over, I pour some water in it, shake it, and use it for another bath.

That i use talcum powder to absorb oil spills from clothes and use newspapers to clean up oil spills
That for me a toothpaste isn't over until I've entirely flattened it out and started rolling it up from the back.
That I buy broccoli and avocados for 300 Rupees, but still ask for some dhaniya patta for free.
That I don't just recycle gifts, I recycle the gift-wrapping paper too.
Our home has fine bone china crockery which is used only when guests visit.
That I worry about price of gold without any reason of buying it!
That I will beat the crap out of my remote to make it work but not change the battery
I get so disappointed if the pani puri guy doesn't give a free sukha puri in the end when I ask for one.
That I won't have my breakfast and starve myself if I have been invited for a lunch buffet.
That when my T-shirt gets old, I use it as night wear, when it gets older, I play holi in it & then I use it as a pochha.
That I ask for extra oregano and chili flakes from the Dominos guy, so that I can use them later in the Maggi or even raw salad..

IBM - Patenting its way to the top

IBM inventors earned a record 6,180 U.S. patents in 2011 thus retaining the top position for winning patents for a record 19 years. These patents enable new innovations and add significant value to the company's products, services, including smarter solutions for retail, (yes, my area of work :-)banking, healthcare, transportation and other industries. These patented inventions also span a wide range of computing technologies poised to support a new generation of more cognitive, intelligent and insight-driven systems, processes and infrastructures for smarter commerce, shopping, medicine, transportation, and more. That makes me a very proud IBMer
And, if you are interested in some trivia - Facebook is buying quite a few of IBM patents to boost its defense.
